The following day Santiago spears the marlin and wins, however sharks come and eat the tissue of the marlin. So Santiago isn't crushed and isn't successful.

Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, Indonesia and different nations in the area experienced yearly development paces of more than 7 percent. Alongside this fast development, these nations additionally observed next to no joblessness and a practically undetectable riches hole between the diverse social and monetary classes of residents. Conditions have significantly changed, be that as it may. In the mid year of 1997, Southeast Asia encountered a period of extraordinary budgetary and financial unrest. From the outset, the monetary emergency was detached in Thailand's money related part, yet it immediately spread to Malaysia, Indonesia and South Korea also. The Prosperous Times It appears that Southeast Asia has consistently had the option to turn awful occasions around and recoup to wind up as probably the most grounded economies on the planet. South Korea, for example, was feeble and defenseless subsequent to battling a common war with North Korea in 1953. Numerous other Southeast Asian nations had comparative encounters. South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore were recently known as the Four Tigers as a result of their quick and forceful passage into the worldwide commercial center. Different models incorporate Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand, every one of which experienced quick development and flourishing in generally brief timeframes. In the U.S., the Asian supernatural occurrence worked up both wonder and dread. This was particularly so during the 1980s when Asian items became furious rivalry for American items. Japan’s autos and hardware were equaled U.S. items and caused a lot of dread among makers in these U.S. markets. This opposition, to a limited extent, prompted a U.S. exchange shortage. U.S. congress responded by passing various exchange guidelines planned for securing U.S. businesses. Southeast Asian governments occupied with acts that advanced certain enterprises and organizations. They gave them charge credits or sponsorships. History-Assess the short and long term impact of Iran's 1979 Essay

History-Assess the short and long haul effect of Iran's 1979 Revolution - Essay Example The reasons for the Iranian Revolution, in spite of an appearing nonappearance of general emergency so normal for past insurgencies of such magnitude1, were complex. The twentieth century history of Iran was portrayed by disturbance of social logical inconsistencies. The modernizing approaches of the Pahlavi tradition (1926-1979) were, best case scenario uncertain: the political and metro changes of the principal Shah of the line, Reza Shah Pahlavi, were joined by merciless concealment of both administrative and left-wing oppositional movements2. After his relinquishment in 1941, the nation wound up buried in insecurity brought about by the impact of the WW II and remote occupation4. After the disappointment of the endeavor of the mainstream patriot administration of Mohammad Mosaddeq to nationalize oil industry, which prompted the overthrow d’etat against Mosaddeq on August 19, 19534, Mohammad Reza Shah re-expected the domineering forces of his dad. Around then, the administr ative powers of Iran agreed with the Shah, dreading left-wing secularist regime5. The administration of Mohammad Reza Shah set out on the goal-oriented program of the purported ‘White Revolution’ during the 1960s, which was to encourage the improvement of present day ventures in Iran. Notwithstanding Mohammad Reza Shah’s populist affectations, his modernization system special enormous, present day endeavors and the oil division, which served the requirements of universal market, to the impairment of independent companies generally joined into the system of bazaar 6. The state developmentalist approaches prompted the wild inflation7. The Shah’s land change really added to the emergency, as the new laborer cultivators couldn't tend the land as productively as huge scope homesteads would, in this manner prompting huge increments in imports of food stuffs and appropriately in their prices8. The endeavors of the Shah’s government to control taking off sw elling in the mid-1970s just exasperated the situation9. The progressive development, which sprang from the conflicts between the strict understudies and the Shah’s SAVAK security powers in the late 1977, inevitably turned in the nation wide unsettling influences with the general strike of October 197810. The administration of the Pahlavis was quickly crumbling, and on January 16, 1979 Mohammad Reza Shah left Iran. From that point on, the triumph of the Iranian Revolution was ensured. The indications of the general emergency in the Iranian economy were greatly articulated in the quick outcome of the Revolution. Because of wide-scale strike development of 1978-1979, the nation remained near the very edge of monetary breakdown. Starting at 1980, the modern yield fell by practically 20%11 in correlation with the 1977 level, while absolute GNP of Iran in 1981 tumbled to 81 percent of that in 197712. The Revolution proclaimed the start of unconstrained battle of occupations and re allocations; the workers’ councils were shaped in numerous segments, above all else, in oil industry13. Despite the fact that the administration didn't really examine all out nationalization of private division, the complicity of huge financial organizations in huge capital flight constrained it to bow to the weights of mainstream developments and requests of Khomeini-drove Revolutionary Council (RC), and in summer 1979 the nationalization of banks, insurance agencies and significant parts of ventures was conveyed out14. By and by, the PRG strategy stayed mindful in such significant monetary circles as land

5 Brexit questions with Economist Jan Svejnar COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog

5 Brexit questions with Economist Jan Svejnar COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog From  Columbia News, June 24, 2016: The fallout from Brexit, the British exit from the European Union, was nearly immediate. Every global market sank. British Prime Minister David Cameron resigned. A large U.S. investment bank announced it would move 2,000 jobs out of London to either Dublin or Frankfurt, the credit agency Standard Poor’s said that the Britain would lose its AAA rating while Moody’s lowered its rating to negative from stable. More shoes are still to drop, according to Jan Svejnar, the James T. Shotwell Professor of Global Political Economy at the School of International and Public Affairs. While he knew the vote would be close, he believed that Britons would ultimately stay. He was surprised the leave vote was as strong as it was, 52 percent to 48 percent. The repercussions will be significant. “I think we are seeing the unraveling of Great Britain,” he said. Scotland, which two years ago voted no on an independence referendum, will probably opt for a new one. Northern Ireland could do the same. We may be going from Great Britain to small England. Here, Svejnar answers five questions about what will happen now that Britain is withdrawing from the EU. Q. What happens next? A. We are already seeing the first impacts, the gyrations in the stock markets and foreign exchange markets. I think that may continue for a while. Next will come a first round of tough political decisions. German chancellor Angela Merkel will be getting together with Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi and French president Francois Hollande to prepare a statement and stake out their approach to the British decision. Q. What kind of approach might that be? A. They have to negotiate a separation, which won’t be easy. If it is done too fast and too vigorously, it could alienate other EU nations, who may insist the rest of the 25 members should have been consulted rather than having a particular solution designed by the leaders of only those three countries shoved down their throats. There are free trade policies and immigration pacts and a swath of EU regulations that must be unraveled or replaced. The EU won’t want to make it easy for Britain to leave, they don’t want this to set a precedent for other countries. Q. What kind of economic fallout do you foresee? A. There are two years to negotiate the exit, unless markets destabilize to such an extent that they can’t afford to take that long. All the agreements between the EU and Britain must be renegotiated. There may be a substantial relocation of capital from Britain. London could lose its status as a global hub of finance, and I’ve already heard that some banks are looking to move their headquarters. Q. How does this affect the rest of Europe, or the world? A. Britain is now the second largest economy in the EU, and the most outward oriented. There is a chance that Europe itself gets destabilized, because now other governments may ask for exceptions and exemptions from EU regulations. If that happens, Europe may not look to be as friendly a place to invest in, and investors may look to other parts of the world. Also, other nations will be cautious about raising interest rates, to make sure there is no economic contagion. Q. Is there any chance that this can be reversed? A. In principle, yes. It takes a vote of Parliament for the decision to become final. Parliament could conceivably go against the referendum, but the vote was 51.9 percent to 48.1 percent. It would be hard for it to say this was just a joke. Given that David Cameron has already resigned, I don’t see that this can be stopped. [Photo by Bruce Gilbert]

Impact of Technology on the Contemporary Play Habits - 6875 Words

Impact of Technology on the Contemporary Play Habits (Essay Sample) Content: How has TECHNOLOGY changed children's play habits and effected their social and learning development?Name:Institutional Affiliation:Executive summaryThe advent of the digital age has impacted the development of the contemporary society. Child development is among the factors that have been significantly impacted by technology. There are positive and negative impacts of technology on child development and childrenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s play habits. The impact of technology has been varied between third and first world nations. In an environment that is devoid of supervision, there is high potential for children being negatively impacted by technology. Childrenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s play habits have been largely modernized. The social and learning development has been positively and negatively impacted. There is paucity in literature that has focused on this issue. Future research then has to address this gap in knowledge. How has TECHNOLOGY changed children's play habits and effected their social and learning development?IntroductionTechnology has had a profound impact on the society. With time, this impact has been enhanced. Technology has served to ease work (Van, 2004). Its use in the contemporary society then serves to make life easier by simplifying otherwise difficult tasks. There are some benefits and drawbacks associated with the use of technology (Cooper, 2005). Children have also been impacted by the advent of technology. The contemporary society has been characterized by an enhanced dependency on technology (Sinno, Charafeddine, Mikati, Holt Veerapandiyan, 2013). Children too have developed their dependency on technology (Oosterlaken Hoven, 2012). While there are benefits to accrue from such an enhanced dependency on technology, there are also some associated drawbacks. The development of children has been adversely impacted by technology (Ferraro, Casey McGrath, 2005). There are different factors that can be used as a testament of this fact. Childrenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s play habits have been transformed from the traditional approach to a modern approach. The term modernity has been used in reference to the inculcation of technological elements in play time (Sinno, Charafeddine, Mikati, Holt Veerapandiyan, 2013). Childrenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s social and learning development has also been impacted by technology. While the general assumption is that technology aids in enhancing social welfare, there is need to adopt a critical approach in investigating on the wholesome impact of technology on childrenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s play time, social and learning development. Technology has had a profound impact on childrenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s play time which has not incorporated technological elements (Asamen, Ellis Berry, 2008). Moreover, it has also recorded a profound impact on social and learning development. The potential for development has then been enhanced as a result of an increased dependency on technology.TechnologyThe term technology has been used in reference to the products of scientific knowledge (Dodgson, Gann Salter, 2005). Technology then denotes the applications that have been realized when scientific knowledge is applied. The intent is to simply use scientific knowledge for practical purposes. Technology can also be defined as the technical means via which scientific knowledge is employed to the benefit of the society and environment (Pellegrini Smith, 2005). Essentially, the goal is to enhance the quality of social welfare.Technology has been inculcated in almost all aspects of life (Haugen Musser, 2007). It then forms one of the core differences between the contemporary and the traditional societies. Knowledge has thus become increasingly valuable in the contemporary society (Sinno, Charafeddine, Mikati, Holt Veerapandiyan, 2013). The core intent is to identify the needs of the society and the environment. It is in meeting these needs that has enhanced the relevance of technology in the contemporary setting (Howard McInnes, 2013). The same can be said of the societal dependence on technology. Children have also been targeted by technological innovations. The intent has been to meet the perceived needs of children using technological innovations. However, such children targeted technologies have recorded both positive and negative impacts.Developments in technologyThe contemporary society has become synonymous with technological developments (Sinno, Charafeddine, Mikati, Holt Veerapandiyan, 2013). The contemporary society has experienced a higher degree of technological advancements as compared to the previous generations (Selwyn, 2013). It then translates to mean that the impact of technology in the social and learning context has been amplified in this generation. In turn, investigating on the impacts of technology would become critical given that with time, technological developments are steadily being enhanced (Galloway, 2009).The contemporary society has bore witness to improved investments on re search and technology (Sinno, Charafeddine, Mikati, Holt Veerapandiyan, 2013). Technological firms have appreciated the need for enhanced focus on research and development. The intent is to make technology more reliable and applicable for the society. Simply put, the enhanced focus on research and development strives to realize greater societal dependency on technology (Oosterlaken Hoven, 2012). It can then be asserted that the developments in technology will realize an amplified impact on children. The contemporary society has been labeled as the information age (Sinno, Charafeddine, Mikati, Holt Veerapandiyan, 2013). It is characterized by greater access to information. With time, there will be even greater access to information (Bell, Ezell Van, 2007). Moreover, technological developments have also culminated in greater dependence on phone-based applications. Such applications have had a profound impact on the supply and degree of information access (Asamen, Ellis Berry, 2008 ). Technology has thus been critical in fashioning a literacy rich environment. Technological developments will then seek to augment the ability of the teachers to fashion an improved literary rich environment.Technological developments have some associated drawbacks (Sinno, Charafeddine, Mikati, Holt Veerapandiyan, 2013). In the context of children, technology has a distraction effect (Ferraro, Casey McGrath, 2005). Devoid of guidance, there is a risk that children will be distracted. In the traditional sense, children were supposed to engage in play. To an extent, play was a central part in the lives of children (Dinkar Dinkar, 2010). On the same note, devoid of technological input, children adopted the traditional course in social and learning development. Critics point out that technological development has negatively impacted the growth of children and their interaction with society (Sutcliffe, 2002). As technology innovation continues to be embraced by the contemporary soci ety, its impact on the society, and more so the children, will be perpetuated, albeit at enhanced levels.Childrenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s play habitsAccording to Ness Farenga (2007), play is critical for in a childà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s social development. From the psychological stand point, play ensures that there is wholesome brain development. Moreover, it also ensures that a child experiences wholesome development (Sinno, Charafeddine, Mikati, Holt Veerapandiyan, 2013). It then translates to mean that when play is inhibited, social development is also being inhibited. When a child is unable to experience the benefits that accrue from play, their social development capacity will thus be limited (Thompson, Felce Symons, 2000). The goal of ensuring wholesome child development then mandates parents and guardian to ensure that children have play time.`At this juncture, there is need to provide a succinct description of the concept of play. According to Pellegrini Smith (2005), the term play is used in reference to the activities of children when they are not being directed by adults. Essentially, during this time, children are given the freedom to do as they please (Sinno, Charafeddine, Mikati, Holt Veerapandiyan, 2013). Their creativity then takes control of their actions. Such freedom has been deemed critical for child development given the benefits they accrue for children.Play enables children to advance their literacy capacity (Bell, Ezell Van, 2007). Play provides children with the opportunity to practice new sounds (Sinno, Charafeddine, Mikati, Holt Veerapandiyan, 2013). More often than not, this practice is usually embraced when in the company of children. The mere habit of trying out new vocabularies is a habit that aids in literacy development. Literacy is also built by the act of storytelling between children (Pellegrini Smith, 2005). The act of storytelling has been identified as aiding in the development of a childà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s imagination skills. In turn, develo ping this skill has a positive impact on the literacy skills.Play provides an expression tool for children (Sinno, Charafeddine, Mikati, Holt Veerapandiyan, 2013). According to Elkind (2007), play allows children to express themselves using their toys. It is critical for children to have a considerable supply of toys. It is only in this way will children have a wide array of tools using which they can express themselves during play time (Sinno, Charafeddine, Mikati, Holt Veerapandiyan, 2013). Therefore, play provides children with a choice thereby becoming a tool for self-expression.Play aids in the forging of social bonds between children, the peers and the parents who choose to engage in the play activity (Howard McInnes, 2013). Children who are given the opportunity to play are ...
